We believe giving to those who beg does more harm than good.

Why shouldn’t I give money?

Drug testing of people arrested for begging in Westminster in November 2005 disclosed that 70.3% of those arrested tested positive for Class A drugs. These drugs are highly addictive and eventually lead to extreme deterioration in health and even death.

He’s just a few pounds short and he needs to book into a hostel tonight…

The vast majority of hostel accommodation in London does not require payment for a person to 'book in'. Hostel rent is covered through Housing Benefit which hostel workers can help the new resident to claim once they have moved into the hostel.

Surely there’s no harm in giving a few pence…

Giving to people who beg is not a benign act; it can have fatal consequences.

Won't those on the street turn to crime if they do not receive money from begging?

Hostel staff working with persistent beggars have found that a reduction in income from begging can be a catalyst for positive change. The client may spend more time meeting with their key-worker and planning for the future. This can lead to them moving into more long-term accommodation or appropriate treatment and away from the street.

Don’t the councils just want cleaner neighbourhoods?

Our primary concern is that people with serious drug and alcohol problems are gravely damaging their health and even putting their lives at risk through misusing drugs bought with money raised through begging.

We are also aware that local communities are justifiably concerned at the impact of begging on their neighbourhoods. These are reasonable fears that the public experience on a day to day basis. We seek to understand and address these concerns.
